The DC chapter of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Children (or simply NUEYS-DC) is a community organization made up of Eritrean-American youth living in the DC metro area. The following are brief descriptions of the programs we implement.
- Our Eritrean Language School (ELS) is our largest and most successful program. ELS teaches students between the ages of 7 and 18 two of Eritrea’s most widely spoken languages, Tigrinya and Arabic. Classes are held every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Eritrean Civic Community Center. From an initial class of 30 in September 2006, over 100 youth now attend our weekly sessions where, in addition to languages, students learn about Eritrean history and culture.
- Our Professional Advancement Seminar Series is geared toward fostering the development of young adults and working professionals through workshops and panel discussions. Young Eritrean-American professionals typically facilitate discussions on topics related to their particular field of work.
- Our Mentorship Program is our newest program and was initiated to provide Eritrean-American teenagers with positive role models. In addition to planned monthly activities, the relationship between mentors and mentees is furthered fostered by the frequent interaction of its participants.
- Cultural Series aims to acquaint Eritrean-American youth with the literature, cuisine, and other facets of Eritrean culture. As apart of cultural awareness and need, NUEYS-DC is hosting a variety of events and programs to stimulate your mind and cultural curiosity. These programs include, Eritrean Cooking Classes, Eritrean Book Club, Film screenings and many more exciting events to be launched in 2008.
- The first Annual Members Retreat for NUEYS-DC was held in Nags Head, North Carolina from September 14-16, 2007. It has now become an annual organizational retreat. Its purpose is to build camaraderie among NUEYS-DC’s members, assess its performance, and articulate a plan for the future of the organization. Check out our retreat photos!
